During the winter of 1916-1917, 47th Division were holding the line in various sectors of the Ypres salient in Belgium. This was always a hotly contested part of the Western Front which was now made worse by an extremely cold and wet winter. On 29th March, 1917, 8th London (Post Office Rifles) of 140 Brigade, moved into the trenches in the Canal sub-sector in the southern part of the salient for another tour of the front line. The following day, 30th March, the battalion support area behind the front line was heavily shelled by the German guns resulting in twenty casualties, eight of whom were killed. One of these was William Maher. |
